(KMOV) --  Last week, Illinois officials approved the hiring of more instructors for conceal carry classes.

Fifty-four instructors were originally approved but the number has now jumped to 860 in Illinois with 18 in St. Clair County and 16 instructors in Madison County. These instructors will teach the necessary training to get a conceal carry permit.

More instructors are expected to be approved next week to help meet the huge demand.

Illinois State Police estimated between 300,000 and 400,000 people would like it as soon as it's available. I had a retired gentleman who said can you do it tomorrow, I can do it tomorrow, and my whole day is open,” said Mark Palmisano with the Safety Training Center.

Approved instructors still need more paperwork before they can start scheduling classes. Conceal carry license applications will be available on January 5.
