Residents return home after evacuation following suspected gas leak

(KMOV.com) – St. Louis firefighters evacuated several homes in the Walnut Park neighborhood following a gas leak Wednesday night.

According to fire officials, around 7:30 p.m. a vehicle hit a gas pipe near the intersection of Oriole and Theodore.

The occupants of the vehicle were gone when police arrived, and although they don’t smell gas and their monitors show no evidence of explosive levels of gas, they do hear hissing.

So, erring on the side of safety, four occupied homes were evacuated and the intersection was shut down a block in either direction. Laclede gas workers were dispatched just after 8 p.m..

Shortly before 9 p.m., the area was declared safe and residents were allowed back in their homes.

According to police, the vehicle was traveling nearly 100 miles per hour when it hit the gas exchange. The occupants left behind drug paraphanalia.
