(KMOV) – The St. Louis Fire Department said the last two deadly fires in the city involved the use of space heaters.

As the cold winter drives up heating costs, authorities urge residents to make sure their space heaters are well-maintained.

Don’t buy a commercial-grade heater for a home and stick with the manufacturer recommendations and always give the space heater space.

"if you're going to use a secondary heating element, it needs to be in the middle of the room. away from any sort of combustible materials and when you leave the room, you need to take proper care and caution that you switch that unit off,” said Captain Gregg Favre with the St. Louis Fire Department.

Firefighters say they also see fires caused when people try to alter the cord. Don’t run it under a carpet or pinch it by running the cord along a wall.
