(KMOV) – Family members of a Cahokia inmate killed in the city jail have filed suit claiming guards failed to protect him.

In 2012, jailers found Timothy Johnson beaten and strangled to death.

According to the lawsuit, jailers put Johnson in a cell with Mark Luster, 42, despite Luster’s threats to harm fellow inmates.

The suit asks for more than $1,000,000 in damages.
