(KMOV.com) – A revitalization in East Alton is expected to break ground on Monday.
The revitalization project has been years in the making and will replace a part of town referred to as the “defense area”. The “defense area” was made up of barracks style housing leftover from decades ago when workers from the ammunition plant in the area worked 12 hour days.
The redevelopment will create 46 brand new single-family homes built in a U-shape surrounding the Community Rec Complex.
The new single-family homes will be affordable to families who earn 60 percent of the Area Median Income, which includes nearly two-thirds of East Alton residents.
Rise Community Development, a nonprofit organization known for revitalizing neighborhoods in the St. Louis area, partnered with the Southwestern Illinois Development Authority (SWIDA) for the $15.9 million dollar project.
The redevelopment is scheduled to be completed in early 2015.
