A Belleville man was arrested after police said he faked being homeless in order to avoid listing his address as a sex offender.

David Hoffarth, 49, was charged with failure to register as a sex offender, a class 2 felony.

Investigators said Hoffarth told deputies he was homeless while visiting the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Department on Wednesday to comply with his sex offender registration requirement.

But deputies noticed he was clean and well groomed, so they followed him.

According to police, Hoffarth walked down F Street and got into a red passenger car being driven by another man.

They then led deputies to an apartment in the 800 block of North Church St., where they determined he had been living and paying rent.

He was taken into custody, where he remains on $50,000 bond.
