(KMOV.com) -- Starting Monday, major department of defense furloughs begin which stem from the March sequester.

The furloughs impact 650,000 employees, including 4,500 Scott Air Force Base and 3,400 hundred at Fort Leonard Wood.

Civilian workers will be forced to take one unpaid day off each week through September 21- a 20 percent pay reduction.

Observers warn the furloughs could slow the delivery of much needed supplies to troops.

Furloughs are expected to save $1.8 billion - a fraction of the $40 billion to be cut from the defense budget.
