(KMOV.com) – The Circuit Attorney’s Office has charged a man in connection with the attempted theft of an armored vehicle that occurred on Tuesday.

Jerome Rankins, 26, was taken into custody on Tuesday and charged with first-degree tampering with a motor vehicle.

The St. Louis Police Metro Department’s “Raptor” was parked in the 5800 block of Westminster Place when Rankins attempted to steal the starter from the vehicle, ultimately damaging one of the vehicle’s tires.

The vehicle, which is intended to serve as a crime deterrent, features infrared cameras that can be used in criminal investigations.

Surveillance footage from the vehicle aided officers in identifying Rankins.

A judge has set bond at $50,000.
