(KMOV.com) – Critics say a proposed “Crime-Free Rental Housing” ordinance in Belleville may not protect victims of domestic or sexual violence.

The proposed law would require landlords to evict renters if a “Hearing Officer” finds they have violated the law.

Alderwoman Melinda Hult of Belleville is concerned that in the case of domestic abuse, a landlord could put not only the suspect out of the home, but the victim as well.

“…ordinance says the landlord may throw out the whole family so a woman or man who has abused is twice victimized not to mention their children…”

The housing ordinance would affect thousands of Belleville residents.
