(KMOV) – Two big water main breaks could impact the Wednesday morning commute for some drivers.

Crews worked feverously to fix a large water main break along Illinois Highway 159 in Swansea where two of the four lanes were shut down.

The repairs to the water main have taken longer than expected and has caused problems on the road with slick spots.

“It was scary to get right up on it and to see the traffic and to see the water coming up,” said Venessa Smith

American Water crews worked tirelessly to fix the water main break, attempting to get things back to normal.

“I did fall today, so the roads and the streets are really bad, it's that black ice up under there,” said Cynthia Taylor.

Crews were also addressing trouble spots at the intersection of Hwy 159 and 161 and the area side streets which were still in rough shape. Crews are expected to be working into the overnight hours to get these spots repaired before the morning commute.

“They’ll make the repairs that they need to so that the road is back open tomorrow, should be good to go by rush hour tomorrow,” said Karen Cotton with American Water.
