(KMOV) – A crooked police officer who admitted to being involved in a drug plot in the Metro East could get let off easier than expected.

Orland Ward, a former detective in East St. Louis is facing a minimum 10-year prison but now his lawyer wants that lowered to seven years or less.

Ward pleaded guilty to attempting to distribute more than $1.5 million of cocaine. His lawyer argues Ward deserves a reduced sentence under a federal provision.

The case goes back to court next month.
