(KMOV) – Some St. Louis City residents have been complaining the city’s water tastes and smells bad.

Residents say the taste and smell resembles chlorine.

The city's water division say half of its customers are experiencing this issue. Those customers are from north St. Louis, the Central West End and parts of south St. Louis.

The city’s director of public utilities say the source of the possible chlorine could be traced to the Chain of Rocks treatment plant. The director, Curt Skouby, said something occurred during the water disinfecting process.

“We strive very hard to have no taste or odors, but we don't always succeed. And this is one of those times,” Skouby said.

Skouby says the water is safe to drink and is not contaminated.

The  water division says the disinfecting process will be fixed by Wednesday, but it may take a day or two before it works its way through the entire distribution system.
