(KMOV.com) -- The St. Louis County Police Department is searching for a white SUV involved in a deadly hit and run accident that left a 2-year-old male dead and his teenage relative with minor injuries.
St. Louis County Police responded to the 1500 block of Redman Ave. just after 8:00 p.m. Sunday.
Witnesses reported that the newer-model white SUV, with tinted windows and possible chrome running board, was traveling at a high rate of speed east bound on Redman Ave. near Bellefontaine Rd. when the vehicle struck 2-year-old Darion Griffin and 17-year-old Shariea Evans.
Authorities said Griffin was crossing the street to play with Evans, his relative, when he was hit by the SUV. Evans was hit when she tried to pull the boy out of the path of the vehicle.
The driver left the scene immediately heading eastbound on Redman, turning south on Raymond. Both victims were rushed to a nearby hospital where the boy was pronounced dead.
Officers shut down Redman for several hours as they investigated the incident. The road reopened Monday morning.
On Monday afternoon, police said they found the SUV abandoned and were speaking with a person of interest. By mid-afternoon no arrests had been made.
The investigation is ongoing.
