(BaseballStL) - Michael Wacha did everything he could to try and push for a big league roster spot. And some would say he might deserve it.

But with just 21 professional innings under his belt after being drafted just nine months ago, the Cardinals sent Wacha to minor league camp Friday morning to let him continue to build up his pitch count to start the season in the Triple-A Memphis rotation.

Wacha was arguably the Cardinals best pitcher in camp this spring. He made four appearances with the big league club and didn't allow a run, tossing 9 2/3 scoreless innings with 13 strikeouts to just six hits and one walk.

"It was unbelievable," Wacha said. "I wasn't even really expecting to get an invite. I just looked at it as an opportunity to come out here and show what I had and hopefully open up some eyes and hopefully I did that."

"Obviously it doesn't feel good. I'm just going to go down there and keep on pitching the way I have and hopefully I'm not down there for too long."

The Cardinals also optioned pitchers Eduardo Sanchez and Vic Marte to Memphis, bringing their total of players still in camp to 45.
