(BaseballStL) -- The St. Louis Cardinals placed Matt Holliday, who strained his right hamstring against the Chicago Cubs last weekend, on the 15-day disabled list. The move is retroactive to July 12.

As a result, the Cardinals purchased Brock Peterson, who was recently named to the Pacific Coast League All-Star team, from Triple-A Memphis.

Peterson, 29, posted a .306 batting average and bashed a PCL-leading 22 home runs with 66 RBI in 93 games played for Memphis. He can play either first base or outfield.

The Cardinals may have found that quality right-handed bat off the bench with Peterson, who batted .341 against lefties this season. He also owns a .301 average with runners in scoring position.

Peterson, who stands 6-foot-3 and weighs 215 pounds, was selected in the 49th round in the 2002 Draft by the Minnesota Twins. He signed a minor league contract with the Cardinals on August 14, 2012.

Holliday was hoping to avoid the disabled list by resting over the All-Star break and was expected to test his injured hamstring this weekend. No timetable has been set for his return.
