Man injured in propane explosion inside south St. Louis garage

SOUTH CITY, MO (KMOV) – Firefighters responded to the scene of a garage explosion in South City on Tuesday.

The explosion reportedly happened in the alley between Rutger St. and Caroline St. shortly after 4 p.m.

According to Captain Dan Sutter of the St. Louis Fire Department, one adult male was badly injured following the explosion that occurred in the garage in the 3100 block of Rutger.

Witnesses told firefighters they heard explosions. Captain Sutter said firefighters also reported hearing smaller explosions upon arriving at the scene.

According to fire investigators, the cause of the explosion appeared to be accidental.

The victim was reportedly working in his garage and somehow ignited propane, causing the explosion.

The fire damaged two neighboring homes, melting the siding.

The victim was transported to Barnes Jewish Hospital where his condition remains unknown.
