St. Louis, Mo. (KMOV) – One person was taken to a hospital after a plane crashed and caught fire, closing Mo. Route 364 near the Veterans Bridge in west St. Louis County early Thursday morning.
Around 5:00 a.m., a twin engine Cessna crashed just east of the Veterans Bridge, roughly 15 feet from the roadway, near the Page Ave. Extension closing both directions of the roadway.
Authorities said the plane was fully engulfed in flames following the crash.
Police said the plane took off from Creve Coeur airport, experienced mechanical problems and was trying to get back to the airport when it crashed. Authorities said the plane impacted just south of a bike trail, then skidded into a treeline next to the highway.
According to authorities, the pilot, James Turner, 48, of Chesterfield, was able to make it out of the downed plane and call dispatch. Authorities said no one else was inside the aircraft at the time of the incident.
An officer on the scene said Turner was taken to Mercy Hospital for treatment of non-life- threatening injuries.
Crews have reopened Route 364.
