(KMOV.com) -- The Rev. Lawrence Biondi announced Saturday night he will resign as president of Saint Louis University.

Biondi made the announcement at a gala honoring his 25 years of leading the university.

“Just as I helped lead SLU’s transformation when I arrived here more than 25 years ago, I know it is now time for the next transformation to begin,” Biondi said. “And, so, with the blessing of our Board of Trustees, I have decided it is time for a transition in leadership for Saint Louis University — time for me to move on to the next phase of my life."

Biondi said he will stay at the university during the search for his successor.

Last year, SLU's faculty approved a vote of no confidence against Biondi. Tensions increased after Manor Patankar, vice president of academic affairs, suggested changes to the school's tenure rules.

The faculty became upset with Biondi after he refused to remove Patankar. Several critics also said the university's rankings and endowment growth had declined under Biondi's leadership.

At the time, a SLU spokesman said the university's academics, student body size and reputation had all improved during Biondi's 25-year tenure.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
