(KMOV.com) – The Better Business Bureau wants residents to be on guard against rip-offs following the weekend storms.
Storm victims want their homes fixed they’re often desperate to get it done as soon as possible.
“Don’t be pressured into making a hasty decision,” said Michelle Corey with the Better Business Bureau.
Less than reputable companies spread out through a storm ravaged area and the complaints to the BBB aren’t far behind.
“Start off with your insurance company,” Corey said. “Read your homeowner’s policy see what is covered.”
Most insurance companies want an adjuster to survey the damage before they authorize repairs.
Corey says don’t let door-to-door salespeople pressure you to make a quick decision.
Get several bids.
Do your homework and check the company’s qualifications, get references and make sure the company is licensed and bonded.
She says even responsible companies can sometimes become overwhelmed by the number of jobs and get backed up.
Use the “one-third rule.” Pay a third when you sign the contract, a third midway through the job and a third when it’s completed.
“The homeowners who get into trouble are the ones who pay all their money up front and they don’t have a signed contract,” Corey added.
She says make sure that contract spells out exactly what the job will be if the contractor promises you something, get it in writing.
