(KMOV.com) -- Police say 1,600 people living in St. Louis City and County had their vehicles broken into or stolen last November through December.

In the winter months, many people turn on their vehicle and let it warm up. Many times while the car is warming up people return to their warm house, leaving cars unlocked.

Authorities say oftentimes a criminal sees the car sitting out and will take what is in the car or steal it.

Police are warning to be aware and make sure that the vehicle is locked and in a lighted area at all times.
