WORDEN, Ill. (KMOV) -- Residents in several southern Illinois counties heard an explosion that destroyed a Worden, Illinois home under renovation early Thursday morning.

A lieutenant with the Madison County Sheriff's Department tells News 4, debris was everywhere in the 7900 block of Possum Hill Road after a house exploded around 1 a.m.

Police said the home appears to have been under renovation and the homeowners were not there at the time of the explosion.

No injuries were reported.

The News 4 phones and Facebook page were buzzing Thursday with calls from residents in several towns such as Troy, Marine, Alhambra, Edwardsville, Granite City and Staunton, Illinois.

The Madison County Fire Marshal is leading the investigation into the cause. It is not believed to be drug-related.

Prairietown Fire Chief John Gusewelle says copper pipes outside and inside the home on the 57-acre property had been cut out. But he says the damage has left it impossible to determine the exact cause of the explosion.

Neighbor Joel Bradler says he's been doing renovations for the property's owner and that when he was there Wednesday he didn't notice an odor of leaking gas or anything else unusual.
