(KMOV.com) -- The St. Francois County Prosecuting Attorney's office has issued charges in connection with the disappearance and death of a man whose remains were found in a septic tank in rural northeast St. Francois County.
Melvin John Scherrer, 49, was charged with first-degree murder, armed criminal action, felonious restraint, abandonment of a corpse, and tampering with physical evidence in a felony prosecution.
Police said 38-year-old Samuel “Tick” Francis of Cape Girardeau was last seen outside a residence in Desloge, Mo., on December 23, 2012 and was reported missing on December 23.
Police discovered the remains Thursday on an unoccupied property on Highway K, located northeast of Bonne Terre around 12 p.m.
Francis' remains were identified by dental records late Friday morning, according to officials.
Authorities said the body’s discovery was the result of a seven-month missing person investigation.
Bonne Terre is located about 50 miles southwest of St. Louis.
Scherrer is being held in police custody without bond.
