(KMOV.com) -- In a world where you can do almost everything online, scammers have a new opportunity to rip residents off.

In the case of a 74-year-old St. Peters man, thieves attempted to divert the Social Security payments was the target.

He got two letters from the social security administration, one dated June 16 thanking him for using Social Security’s online services- something he did not do.

Then another letter dated June 25 stating he requested to change bank accounts for Social Security payments.

Investigative reporter Chris Nagus is digging into the scam and how residents can protect themselves.
