Mix-up causes collection agency to call St. Louis woman every 6 hours

ST. LOUIS (KMOV) -- Getting a call from a collection agency can be alarming, especially if you don’t have any unpaid bills. A St. Louis woman tried for months to tell a Florida company they had the wrong person - and the wrong number, but nothing worked.

Mary Stoecklin has had the same phone number for 15 years. Earlier this year she got a strange call.

“And the message said, ‘this is for Corey Barber, if you’re not Corey Barber, please hang up.’ So, I did, ‘cause I’m not Corey Barber.”

She thought that was the end of it. She was wrong.

“I have been getting calls since January 3, roughly every 6 hours,” she said.

Mary is disabled and says her phone is her life line. The calls were tying up the phone, and causing Mary concern over her credit rating.

She tracked down the company behind the calls, Enhanced Recovery Systems, a Florida collection agency, and called them.

“When he answered he said, ‘oh, hello Mr. Barber, can I help you?’  And I said, ‘I’m not Mr. Barber, this is why I’m calling’ and he said ‘oh, I’m sorry, I’ll take care of it. Don’t worry.’

Mary has called Enhanced Recovery a dozen times, sent emails and even enlisted the support of her phone company. The calls kept coming.

“This is harassment,” she said.

Since Mary’s calls weren’t working, News 4’s Mike Colombo decided to try.

“She is not Corey Barber.  Her number is not Corey Barber’s, she doesn’t know a Corey Barber.”

After a little more discussion, Enhanced Recovery Systems confirmed that Mary will not receive any more calls.

Mary has confirmed to News 4 that the calls have stopped, but there's still no word on who Corey Barber really is.
