LINCOLN COUNTY, Mo. (KMOV) – The family of a missing Lincoln County woman has discovered the DNA from a body found in a riverbank in August is of their relative.

Sherri Wood disappeared from Elsberry, Missouri last July and a body matching her description was found a month later, but the family needed DNA confirmation to prove it was her.

At the time, Wood’s family was told the DNA was being tested at the state crime lab in Jefferson City but received no answers months later.  It was then that the family contacted News 4’s Chris Nagus for help.

After Chris got involved, it was discovered that the DNA sample was not at the crime lab but instead sitting in a file cabinet at the St. Louis County Medical Examiner’s Office.  Officials stated that nobody had requested it for testing.

Immediately the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department sent deputies to retrieve the DNA for testing.  After receiving confirmation, the family of Sherri Wood can finally bury her remains with her parents.

“Along with this death certificate if you will allow me I would like to thank the people of Elsberry for all the questions, thoughts and prayers,” Greg Bufford, Sherri’s uncle, said.  “I want to thank Channel 4 News for initially finding samples that hadn’t been processed yet.”

In addition, Bufford did not want to place blame for the delay in the results; his family just needed answers.
