(News 4 Investigates) -- Who doesn't want a good deal? But one deal we discovered is nothing but a rip-off.
The company takes your money and delivers nothing and the man behind it is no stranger to controversy.
Savemore.com is a catchy name with an easy concept: but it's a total rip-off.
Becca Hamm of Creve Couer logged on last December. She saw a daily deal, a $25 gift card to Barnes and Noble for just $15. She bought one and so did her husband, but neither of them received a gift card.
Carol Esmar of O’Fallon, Missouri also paid for the same deal but just like the Hamms, she got nothing. So Esmar started venting on the internet, “I put everything on Facebook” she told us.
The company is based in Dallas, more than 1,000 people from across the country have complained to their local Better Business Bureau. The company is connected to a man named Doug Van Arsdale.
Van Arsdale recently sold a Dallas area mansion valued at more than 1 million dollars.
As it turns out this isn't the first time Van Arsdale's been accused of ripping off people in the St. Louis area.
In March, the Missouri Attorney General filed an injunction against another one of Van Arsdale’s businesses. He was running an unrelated company called Credit Solutions. People signed up for debt relief, but many of those customers ended up in worse financial shape than when they started. Van Arsdale has been ordered to pay $14 million in restitution in Missouri.
The Dallas BBB gave Credit Solutions and Savemore.com an “F”. Savemore.com’s parent company is something called Auger Inc. News 4’s Chris Nagus went to Dallas to find out what they do, but everyone who walked by him at the front door of the company’s address refused to answer his questions.
News 4 also tried getting in contact with the man who is listed as Savemore.com’s registered agent with the state of Texas. He didn't call back. Considering one Van Arsdale venture has already been in so much trouble with Missouri and considering the latest round of complaints, we are forwarding this story to the Attorney General to see what happens next.
