(KMOV) -- A new study shows there has been a dramatic increase in hospitalizations for children with high blood pressure.

The study shows the number has doubled for kids under 18 between 1997 and 2006.

Experts believe the rise in childhood obesity may be behind the recent jump in hospital stays due to high blood pressure.

It is recommended that doctors start measuring a child’s blood pressure starting at 3 years old.
