(KMOV.com) – Officials have told News 4 that prescription drug abuse is rising among pre-teens in Lincoln County.
Authorities have told News 4 that more people are abusing prescription drugs than heroin, LSD, inhalants, and cocaine combined. According to recent statistics, the number of drug overdoses per capita tripled in Missouri between 1999 and 2010. Only six other states have more overdoses.
“We all should be shocked by it,” drug expert Mike Morrison said. “We all should be scared by it."
Morrison told News 4 the problem is growing among young people because they believe the drugs are safe since they are prescribed by a doctor.
"That kind of thinking is what will get young people, old people even into a lot of trouble,” Morrison said. Just because it's prescribed by a doctor means it's regulated and it's overseen and that's not happening when the abuse occurs, there's no oversight.”
The Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) will be holding a drug take back event Saturday where people can drop off unwanted prescription drugs. You can find a drop off location by clicking here.
