(KMOV.com) -- With more and more children playing competitive sports year round, a growing number of young athletes are suffering overuse injuries.
16-year-old Umoja Robinson is a track star who runs ten miles a day. Now, his doctor ordered him off the field because of a stress fracture.
Loyola University researchers studied more than 1,200 patients between the ages of eight and 18, finding athletes like Robinson who train intensively are more likely to suffer injury.
Doctors encourage athletes to take time off.
“Take a month off between seasons,” said Dr. Jason Baynes of Englewood Hospital. “To let your body fully recuperate after a long season, take less than a month, roughly 3-4 weeks.”
Doctors also suggest children and teens should not play sports for more hours than their age each week.
