(KMOV.com) - Health officials in St Louis City and St. Louis County say highly contagious infection is hitting day care centers.
Officials said reports of Shigellosis are way up from June 2013. 55 cases have been reported in St. Louis City and 71 in St. Louis County. Shigellosis is a bacterial infection that is commonly spread by poor hygiene and causes diarrhea for about five to seven days.
“People not washing hands after changing a diaper or not cleaning diaper stations with Lysol or bleach after changing diapers is how it has been spreading," said Dr. Faisal Khan of the St. Louis County Health Department.
Officials are advising hand washing as the best way to stop the spread of Shigellosis.
