(KMOV) -- The vaccine manufacturer MedImmune is announcing a limited, voluntary, non-safety-related recall of remaining unused doses of H1N1 nasal spray vaccine in Jefferson County.
The recall is being issued to thirteen specific lost due to decreasing potency in the vaccine. The situation is similar to one that occured two weeks ago. There are no safety concerns with these lots and all lots passed pre-release testing for purity, potency and safety. However, because their potency is now or might soon be below the specified lower limit, the vaccine has a shorter than expected shelf life.
These doses were distributed in October and early November and the Jefferson County Health Department did recive vaccine from these lots, but had administered all doses from them by the end of November. At the time of administration, all vaccine doses were fully potent and within specifications. People who received vaccine from the recalled lots do not need to take any action. Adults and children under ten who have received the recommended two doses do not need any further doses of the vaccine.
Despite the recent decreasing number of H1N1 cases, flu activity is expected to continue for months, caused by either 2009 H1N1 viruses or regular seasonal flu viruses, although levels of activity are expected to vary during the season.
Supplies of 2009 H1N1 vaccine are increasing and immunization is availbe to anyone who wants it in numerous locations around Jefferson County.
