(KMOV.com) – Illinois American Water issued a boil water order for Alton, Godfrey, Grafton and Elsah after a water main break Friday morning.

A water main on McInerney Ave. in Alton caused a loss of water pressure by Illinois American Water’s Alton District. Due to the pressure loss, the company issued a boil water order for the area.

Illinois American Water said customers in the immediate downtown Alton area were not affected.

A boil water order will be in effect until water quality samples confirm the water is safe.

Any water being used for drinking or cooking should be brought to a rolling boil for 5 minutes before consumption. If using water for bathing, washing or other common uses the water does not need to be boiled.
