(KMOV.com) – Some residents of O’Fallon, Ill are concerned about an intersection they consider dangerous after two people were hit by a car Saturday morning.
Police said two people were hit on Highway 50 near the O’Fallon Community Park. Witnesses told News 4 the victims were walking to their car after seeing their grandchild play in the park. Police said one victim has died while the other is recovering.
“I heard a thud, I heard breaks stop and I looked over and saw a man dropping from the air,” witness Cheryl Cruz said.
Cruz was working at a nearby concession stand when the victims were hit. She told News 4 neither the pedestrians nor the driver did anything wrong, adding the problem is with the street itself.
“This road is extremely dangerous on weekends,” Cruz said. “People are trying to cross because of the kids playing across the street. It’s convenient and close.”
Police also told News 4 the driver was not drunk, speeding, or using her cell phone. Police also said they are still investigating but do not expect to file charges.
Cruz said she wants the city of O’Fallon to explore how it can make the intersection safer.
“Unfortunately these people actually used the crosswalk and still had the accident,” Cruz said. “Most people don't use the crosswalk and run across the street.”
