(KMOV.com) -- Two police officers and a suspect were shot late Wednesday night in north St. Louis.
The incident happened around 11 p.m. in the 900 block of Elias Avenue near Halls Ferry Road when the two officers responded to a house panic alarm.
According to police, when the officers arrived on the scene, a 44-year-old black male suspect emerged from the basement door and opened fire on the officers. Authorities say the officers never had a chance to speak to the suspect.
The officers and the suspect exchanged gunfire, with all three sustaining gunshot wounds.
Both officers, one male and one female, were taken to Barnes-Jewish Hospital. The female officer was shot in the foot. She has been an officer for six years.The male officer, shot in the upper thigh, has been on the force for two.
According to St. Louis Metropolitian Police Chief Sam Dotson, both officers were talking and in good spirits as of midnight.
The suspect is in critical condition at Saint Louis University Hospital. He suffered multiple gunshot wounds in the shoot-out.
Authorities said a preliminary investigation indicated that the suspect may have been the homeowner, and may have set off his own alarm. A loaded semi-automatic handgun was recovered from the scene. The investigation is ongoing.
