(KMOV) -- A new construction home in St. Clair County was recently cleaned out by criminals. Police say thieves are targeting houses all because they’ve been there before.
“New items such as fridges, gas grills that cost $7,000 but in total it was $60,000 worth of brand new items,” said St. Clair County Sheriff Rick Watson.
But Sheriff Watson said they’re getting close to pinpointing the perpetrators-believing they could be construction workers who’d been working in the area.
“They might have even seen the items being delivered to the area,” said Sheriff Watson.
Sheriff Watson said the fact that homes are being burglarized by handymen is actually a growing trend and that is making neighbors nervous.
“It’s starting to make you wonder what’s causing all this,” said Jim Wolf, the Neighborhood Association President.
Jim Wolf said he notices a lot of the workers coming in and out of the neighborhood. He said he’ll be keeping a closer eye out from now on.
Its advice Sheriff Watson said everyone should follow and when you’ve got to hire someone, ask for background checks.
Just because you are hiring contractor doesn’t mean you know who he is hiring to do the job,” said Sheriff Watson.
Sheriff Watson told News 4 they need the public’s help to crack the case, if you know anything about this crime, call them.
