(KMOV) – A teenage student was shot near the Vashon High School campus Wednesday morning.
According to police, a group of teenagers were walking to school near the intersection of Webster and Sheridan around 7:45 a.m. when they were approached by another group.
Police said the second group was looking for a friend but he was not there. Authorities said members of the initial group then turned around and began to walk away.
Police said that’s when someone from the second group fired shots, striking an 17-year-old in the back.
The group containing the shooter then fled the scene.
The teen, who’s in his senior year at Vashon, was transported to the hospital in stable condition. Authorities said he was breathing and conscious.
According to police, there has been an ongoing feud between the two groups, though they do not think it’s gang-related.
Police said several people witnessed the shooting and think they will have a suspect in custody soon.
Authorities said the school was never on lockdown, but extra security was put in place after the shooting as a precaution.
School officials said crisis counselors were available for students if needed.
