HIGHLAND, Ill. (KMOV.com) -- A 16-year-old girl was killed in a single-vehicle accident in Highland, Illinois Friday, according to a news release from the Madison County Sheriff's Office.

Officials said a 1994 Chevrolet Corvette was traveling on Michael Road, near Iberg Road, in rural Highland around 7:30 Friday night when it left the roadway and flipped at least one time.

The 16-year-old Alexis D'Amico was airlifted to a St. Louis hospital, where she later died.  A passenger was also rushed to a hospital, where she was treated for non life-threatening injuries.

While the accident continues to be under investigation, police believe speed was a factor.

The identity of the passenger has not been released.

The Highland School District is bringing in grief counselors, psychologists, social workers, and ministers to help grieving students cope.
