(KMOV.com) -- A barber is in the hospital after a gunman opened fire in a barber shop Monday. Police do have a man in custody after they chased him and almost ran over him, but this isn't the first incident to happen at the 3-1-4 Hair Gallery.

The man had hopped out of a car and tried to make a run for it, but police caught him on Cora, just south of Natural Bridge in north city.

The entire incident started at the 3-1-4 Hair Gallery just outside of Florissant, Mo.

St. Louis County Police said they have been called several times in recent weeks for reports of violent crimes with weapons that have resulted in multiple arrests.

Creative Mindz Childhood Development Center is right next door to the barber shop and the string of violence has parents worried.

“They couldn’t give me no details,” said parent Taletha Halton, “So being a parent, I did what any parent would do, come find my baby.”

Officials at Creative Mindz said when the shots were fired, the kids were inside sleeping.

Halton said the school called her and told her an incident had happened. They said the kids were safe, but parents could pick up their kids.

Since the beginning of April, St. Louis County Police have come to 3-1-4 a half-dozen times for serious crimes including threats with a knife and an assault with a baseball bat.

A law enforcement source said one man has been at the center of the problems and has been arrested there twice. But police can’t yet say if he is the person in custody for today’s shooting.

“We’ve had quite a bit of activity there the past four to five weeks in terms of calls there, relative to assaults,” said St. Louis County Police Officer Randy Vaughn, “That have raised awareness to that area, but I have no idea if that has any relations to today’s activity.”

3-1-4 employees said the barber that was shot is fighting for his life in the hospital.

They wouldn’t say what happened Monday or if the shooting was connected to all the recent trouble at the shop.

“I’ve got no comment right now,” said a 3-1-4 employee, “I wish I really could tell you something, but I don’t."

St. Louis County Police said a suspect walked into the 3-1-4 Hair Gallery in the 11700 block of W. Florissant around 12:45 p.m. and shot a barber.

The suspect then fled the scene in a white Chevy Malibu and a police chase ensued.

The chase made its way about 10 miles to the 3500 block of Cora in north St. Louis, where the suspect got out of his car. He then attempted to elude police on foot, but tripped near the intersection of Cora and Natural Bridge.

Several police officers converged on the scene and arrested the suspect. He was then taken into custody.

The man injured in the initial shooting was taken to Depaul Hospital in unknown condition.
