EAST ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV) – Police were searching East St. Louis High School after two students were arrested for having a loaded gun on campus Wednesday.

East St. Louis police said a 19-year-old student brought the loaded gun to school and gave it to his 16-year-old friend between classes.

According to Beth Shepherd with the East St. Louis School District, a group of students saw the suspect with a gun on Wednesday and notified a teacher, who found the gun in the student’s backpack.

The teacher then told administrators before they told police.

Officials said the gun was removed from the school and the suspects were taken into custody.

On Thursday, the school was placed on lockdown as authorities searched the school for guns and drugs with the help of police K-9 units. That lockdown was lifted around 12:20 p.m.

Even with five metal detectors and two resource officers at the school, some students say it’s too easy to bring weapons inside.

“Because if they checked us, they would’ve got him when he first came in, instead of making it to the classroom, then kids informing teachers,” said student Antonia Wallace.

District officials said the two students could face expulsion.

The school is holding a special meeting on December 11 for parents to voice their concerns.
