(KMOV.com) – Tanning beds will be banned for anyone under 18-years-old in Illinois starting Jan. 1.
Under the current law, minors are allowed to receive permission from a parent or guardian to be able to tan. But starting next year, those under 18 will not be allowed to tan unless they receive a note from their doctor.
Gov. Quinn made the decision to sign the law into effect in August, citing health concerns for minors using the beds.
Tanning industry advocates say a ban is bad for small businesses. They say parents, not the government, should decide if children can use tanning equipment.
The American Academy of Dermatology says about 8 percent of those who tan indoors in the U.S. every year are teens.
Chicago and Springfield already ban teen tanning.
