FAIRVIEW HEIGHTS, Il (KMOV.com) – Police have charged a St. Louis woman with attempting to elude a police officer.
According to police, a Fairview Heights officer was patrolling the St. Clair Square Mall parking lot when he observed a vehicle he found to be suspicious traveling up and down the parking rows.
The officer noted the vehicle, driven by 23-year-old Chiffon Blanchard, had heavily tinted windows and had passed several vacant parking spaces without parking.
After running a license plate check, the officer determined the car had Illinois license plates registered to another vehicle.
The officer got behind the car, which prompted the Blanchard to pull into a parking space. After activating his lights and getting out of the car, the officer said she fled the scene.
Blanchard reportedly drove to the outer ring road of the mall and entered oncoming traffic, colliding head-on with another vehicle.
The officer took all four of the occupants of the suspect vehicle into custody. Inside the vehicle officers located numerous clothing items still with the sensor tags on them as well as shopping bags with homemade theft detection shielding devices inside.
As a result of the traffic crash EMS was called to treat minor injuries; all occupants of both vehicles refused to be transported to a hospital for treatment.
During the investigation it was determined that all four occupants of the suspect vehicle had previous history for theft, burglary, resisting arrest or attempting to elude police. Blanchard also had an active warrant for her arrest from another jurisdiction.
If convicted, she could face fines and a prison term of one to three years. Blanchard’s bond was set at $15,000 and she remains in custody at the St Clair County Jail.
The passengers of the Blanchard’s vehicle were released from custody without charges.
