(KMOV) -- The St. Louis Zoo has released the first photos of a baby elephant born on Friday night.
Ellie, a 42-year-old Asian elephant, gave birth to a baby girl around 11 p.m.
The 251-pound baby elephant is the third daughter for Ellie, and the the fourth daughter for 20-year-old Raja.
Raja was the first elephant ever born at the St. Louis Zoo.
"Both Ellie and her baby are doing well," said Martha Fischer, curator of mammals.
The River's Edge staff worked hard to prepare for this birth over the past two years.
"Our staff is elated that the baby has arrived, and we are finally able to meet her after such a long gestation," said Fischer.
An Asian elephant's gestation period typically can range between 21 and 23 months.
The zoo has not released the baby elephant's name, or when the calf will first appear in public.
