(KMOV) – Authorities are looking for suspects after a shot was fired at a man trying to help his wife during an armed robbery at a Granite City grocery store.

Police said a woman and her husband were leaving the Schnucks in the 3100 block of Madison Ave. Thursday night when at least two men grabbed her purse.

According to authorities, the victim’s husband tried to intervene. The woman was struck in the head with a gun, and the suspects fled in a dark-colored sedan.

Police said one of the suspects shot at the husband while they fled, but the victim was not hit.

Major Jeff Connor with the Granite City police urged residents to be aware of their surroundings, but said the shooting was an isolated incident.

"This is a rare incident for that to happen," said Connor.

Police said an investigation is ongoing, but no suspects have yet been identified.
