New evidence has emerged on how desperate the financial situation is for several schools in the Metro East.

The Illinois State Board of Education is putting 10 Metro-East districts on its “financial watch,” which means the districts are in serious financial distress.

There are seven districts in St. Clair County, including East St. Louis, Belleville High 201 and O’Fallon District 90. Another three districts on the list are in Madison County , including East Alton, Highland and Edwardsville.

Gery Chico, chairman of the Illinois Board of Education, told News 4 residents need to demand action from legislators:

“We need people to take time out to write their legislator and tell them we don’t want to see this happen anymore,” said Chico. “We want education in Illinois funded properly.”

Some legislators told News 4 the calls will do no good unless lawmakers can agree to some kind of state pension reform.
