(KMOV.com) – The Alton School District spoke early Wednesday evening to address it's actions in the case of eight-year-old Jmyha Rickman.

District officials said they could not comment directly on the incident involving Rickman, but did not appear to be backing away from their actions

Rickman was not in school Wednesday after an incident at Lovejoy Elementary School which ended with her being held at the police station for at least two hours.

The child’s guardian felt the reaction of administrators was excessive- especially for a 70 pound girl, but Assistant Superintendent Kristi Baumgartner said calling police in situations like Rickman’s is part of administrativ policy.

“When a student becomes unsafe and are demonstartring usafe behavior and become a safet risk to themselves and others and staff we sometimes have to involve law enforcement,” she said

News 4 spoke further with administrators, police and Rickman’s family and will bring you a full report tonight at 10 pm.
