(KMOV) -- The biggest boom in public transportation in America in sixty years is happening right now.

The American Public Transportation Association reports that Americans took almost 11 billion trips last year on public buses, trains, and subways.

This is the hightest total since 1956 when the interstates were being built and modern suburbs began booming.

Public transit saw a drop in the recent recession, but has had many services recently restored.
