(KMOV) -- The city of St. Louis is considering a bill that could allow the city to issue fines and other court orders on property owners who don’t maintain historic properties.

The city says the need became very clear with the historic Cupples Building, which had to be torn down because it had not been maintained.

“I think it makes clear they don’t have the option to wait, let it go to seed, and demolish it ten years later,” 20th Ward Alderman Craig Schmid said.

The bill could pass into law by April.
