(KMOV) – Police are searching for the suspects responsible for breaking into a Webster Groves church, stealing cash, instruments, and even soda and cake.

“The door was just shattered,” said Doug Boyd, the office administrator for Cornerstone Free Evangelical Church. “(The people) were sort of amazed that they would do that.”

Boyd says the thieves broke into the church through a window, grabbed a cake in the kitchen, and ate the cake while they were at the church, leaving a trail of crumbs everywhere they went.

“The crumbs were just about every three feet,” Boyd said. “We followed the crumbs right into (the chapel). They put the cake right there or what was left of it.”

The thieves stole acoustic guitars and robbed a safe containing petty cash. Boyd says he believes the burglars were “definitely comfortable with what they were doing.”

Police say they have collected evidence and spoken to residents about the incident.

The investigation is ongoing.
