MASCOUTAH, Il (KMOV.com) – Police report a Metro East man leapt from a moving car during an argument with his girlfriend.

According to police, the man was having a verbal dispute with his girlfriend while the couple was driving down Route 4 just after 1 pm. The victim was reportedly in the passenger seat.

Witnesses tell police that while the car was traveling 50 miles per hour, the man opened the passenger side door and appeared to throw himself from the vehicle.

The victim’s head struck the pavement and he was airlifted to a St. Louis hospital with serious injuries.

Police say based on the statement from the female driver and from several witnesses, they believe the victim jumped out of the car intentionally.

The victim’s girlfriend was questioned but not detained. The victim was unable to make a statement to police, but authorities home to talk to him Tuesday if he has sufficiently recovered.
