ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) -- Police are investigating after a 3-year-old boy was found roaming alone in the city on Sunday afternoon.

Officers were called to North 16th and Cochran Place around noon after residents reported a lost toddler knocking on doors in the neighborhood. Residents then joined police in a search for the child's parent or guardian.

According to police, the boy was dropped off at a babysitter's residence Sunday morning while the mother attended church. Police say the toddler wandered out of the babysitter's apartment, became lost and began knocking on neighbors' doors.

Officers were able to locate the babysitter after a search lasting more than two hours. The boy's mother was notified and came to pick the child up.

Police say the investigation is ongoing. No word yet on whether the babysitter will be charged.
